Follow the Junkanoo...
Dance in the streets...
Let go and hold on tight...
Celebrate Bahamian style!
Harbour Island's diverse cultural history in the Bahamas nurtures an equally diverse calendar of festivals. Junkanoo is reminiscent of New Orleans Mardi Gras and Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, but it is distinctly and uniquely Bahamian. Held on Boxing Day (December 26th), and New Year's Day (January 1st) parade participants arranged in groups of up to 1000, are organized around a particular theme. The Junkanoo costumes, dance and music reflect this. At the end of the Junkanoo procession, judges award cash prizes. The three main categories for the awards are: Best Music, Best Costume, and Best overall Group Presentation.
Harbour Island's Bayside Straw Market is full of Unique crafts and is open seven days a week from early morning until evening. You'll find an array of handmade mats, hats, and baskets along with fabrics, jewelry, shells, Bahamian dolls, and wood carvings.
We could be remiss if we did not recommend the Conch Queen's famous Conch salad.
